ABOUT THE TEAM

Leila Jancovich

Leila is a Senior Lecturer and Course Leader for the MSc International Festivals Management at the UK Centre for Events Management.  She also acts as coordinator for the Yorkshire Festivals Network and is a council member for Arts Council England, Yorkshire. Leila worked for 20 years in the arts and festivals sector as a producer, researcher and policy maker.  She has undertaken research and consultancy for Arts Council England, Arts About Manchester, Manchester City Council and numerous arts organisations.  Her research focus is on cultural policy and festivals management. She is currently undertaking research into public participation in decision making in the arts and developing a collaborative research project into the impacts of regional festivals with De Montfort University and the British Arts Festivals Association.

Professor Franco Bianchini

Franco is Professor in Cultural Planning and Policy in the Faculty of Arts, Environment & Technology at Leeds Met. He has acted as advisor and researcher on cultural planning strategies and projects in various European countries, on behalf of organisations including Arts Council England, the Department for Culture, Media & Sport, the Council of Europe, the European Commission and the European Task force on Culture and Development.

He has lectured on urban and regional cultural policy and planning issues - including on questions of economic and social impact assessment - in countries including Ireland, the UK, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Russia, Poland, Spain, Greece and Italy. He was chosen by the European Parliament to serve on the international panel of experts responsible for recommending the city to be selected as European Capital of Culture for 2005.

His recent research interests encompass such topics as the relationship between participation in cultural activities and social inclusion/civic participation, the role of intercultural practices within innovative urban strategies, the emergence of new professional specialisations in area-based cultural policies and alternative approaches to place marketing.
